Session 11: AI-enpowered low-carbon distribution network planning and management

Modern power systems are rapidly evolving in a manner that is characterized by the convergence of physical infrastructure with advanced communication and computational layers. This transformation has ushered in an era where artificial intelligence (AI) plays a pivotal role in enhancing the resilience, efficiency, and sustainability of power systems. In today’s interconnected world, the integration of AI within cyber–physical energy systems has become indispensable. From optimizing grid operations to revolutionizing energy markets, AI technologies are driving unprecedented innovation. These advancements are not without challenges, particularly concerning security, privacy, and the seamless integration of legacy systems. This Special session seeks to explore these complexities, offering a platform for novel research and practical insights that address the multifaceted nature of AI-driven energy systems.  

Topics (Including but not limited to)

  • 1. Power system planning assisted by AI;
  • 2. Energy markets and energy trade using AI technologies;
  • 3. Security and privacy issues in cyber–physical energy systems;
  • 4. The application of generative AI for decision making in energy systems;
  • 5. Energy prediction and monitoring using deep learning;
  • 6. Smart homes and building energy management based on reinforcement learning;

Chair: Dr. Xiaoyu Zhang, Anhui University, China

Xiao-Yu Zhang holds a Ph.D. degree from the University of London, UK, and is a visiting research fellow at Royal Holloway, University of London and University of Birmingham. The research mainly focuses on intelligent decision-making in smart grids. He has presided over two projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. As the first author or corresponding author, he has published more than 20 papers in SCI-indexed academic journals. He serves as a senior member of the China Electrotechnical Society, a member of the Energy Intelligence Special Committee, and an Associate Editor of Protection and Control of Modern Power Systems.

Co-chair: Dr. Peiqian Guo, Tsinghua University, China

Peiqian Guo holds an intermediate-professional technical position at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. He is a Chartered Engineer (C.Eng.) registered with the Engineering Council and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), UK. His research interests include advanced power system operation and control, cutting-edge flexible DC technologies, renewable energy integration, energy storage systems, and FACTS. He has published over 40 peer-reviewed academic papers, several of which have received prestigious best paper or excellent paper awards, and holds more than 10 granted patents. His contributions include one industry standard, ongoing work on one national standard, and authorship of one national technical report. He has received multiple distinguished individual awards, and excellent reviewer awards for his service as a reviewer for several prestigious international journals.

Co-chair: Dr. Zhenyu Wu, Anhui University, China

Wu Zhenyu is an Assistant Professor at the School of Artificial Intelligence, Anhui University, and a Visiting Scholar at the National University of Singapore. He received his B.Sc. degree in Hefei University of Technology, M.Sc. degree in Yanshan University, and Ph.D. degree in Shanghai Jiao Tong University. His research focuses on intelligent operation and maintenance of renewable energy equipment, as well as big data analytics and decision-making for power systems. Dr. Wu has led one research project commissioned by the Hebei Provincial Department of Education and contributed as a key member to two National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) projects and one State Grid Corporation headquarters R&D initiative. Serving as the first or corresponding author, he has authored over 10 SCI-indexed papers in journals such as IISE Transactions, IEEE Transactions, and Renewable Energy. Additionally, he serves as a reviewer for prestigious journals including Applied Energy and Renewable Energy.
